It was a privilege to have the opportunity to engage with 35 young banking professionals from Dhaka Bank PLC as part of the 90th Banking Foundation Program of Dhaka Bank Training Institute (DBTI). The session focused on Ethics, Integrity & Professional Excellence, along with Workplace Conduct & Grievance Management but at its heart, the conversation went beyond policies, procedures, and professional standards.
It was about something much more fundamental: The choices we make especially when no one is watching.
Ethics and Integrity in the Banking Profession
Banking is built on trust. Customers trust financial institutions with their money, organizations trust employees with critical responsibilities, and colleagues trust one another to act with professionalism and integrity. During the session, we explored several practical aspects of ethical and professional behaviour, including:
- Real-life ethical dilemmas and decision-making
- Integrity and accountability in the workplace
- Professional conduct and workplace behaviour
- Respect and dignity at work
- Prevention of workplace harassment
- Grievance management
- Speaking up when something is not right
- Building trust within teams and organizations
- Personal responsibility for creating a healthy workplace culture1
Rather than treating ethics as a set of rules to memorize, we discussed how ethical behaviour is reflected in our everyday decisions, conversations, actions, and interactions with others.
Professional Excellence Goes Beyond Technical Skills
Young professionals entering the banking industry need more than technical and financial knowledge. They also need the ability to make responsible decisions, communicate respectfully, manage difficult situations, demonstrate accountability, and maintain professional standards even under pressure. This is where professional excellence becomes important. A successful banking professional is not defined only by what they know or how well they perform their technical responsibilities. Professional excellence also means understanding the impact of our behaviour on customers, colleagues, teams, and the organization.

Creating a Respectful and Ethical Workplace
A healthy workplace culture does not happen automatically. It is created through the collective actions of people. Every employee has a role to play in building an environment where people can:
– Speak up.
– Be heard.
– Be respected.
– Take responsibility.
– And do the right thing.
Grievance management, workplace respect, and harassment prevention are therefore not simply organizational policies. They are important elements of building a workplace where employees feel valued, protected, and accountable.
The Future of Banking Will Be Shaped by People
The banking industry is evolving rapidly through technology, automation, digital transformation, data, and new financial systems. But technology alone cannot define the future of banking. People will.
The future will be shaped by professionals who have the courage to speak up, the integrity to do what is right, and the professionalism to treat others with dignity and respect. For young banking professionals, developing these qualities early in their careers can become one of the most valuable investments they make in their professional journey.
Knowledge Can Shape a Career. Integrity Shapes the Professional.
This is one of the key messages I wanted the participants to take away from our session. Skills may help us perform a job. Knowledge may help us build a career. But integrity, professionalism, accountability, and respect help shape the kind of professional we become.
I am grateful to Dhaka Bank PLC and Dhaka Bank Training Institute (DBTI) for the opportunity to contribute to the 90th Banking Foundation Program and to engage with such a promising group of young professionals. I hope the conversation continues beyond the training room and becomes part of the participants’ everyday professional decisions. Because ultimately, professional excellence is not only about what we achieve it is also about how we achieve it.
